Homesickness is a pretty common feeling when you’re settling into a new country. Moving to the Netherlands was no exception — I left behind family, friends, and all the familiar comforts of home. But over time, I found ways to manage these feelings and build a supportive network around me. This post is all about the strategies that helped me stay connected with loved ones, create a local support system, and embrace my new surroundings to feel more at home.

Coping with Homesickness

Staying Connected with Family

Staying in touch with family was crucial in managing my homesickness. Regular communication made the distance feel a bit smaller and provided a much-needed emotional boost. Here’s what worked for me:

1. Regular Video Calls: Scheduling video calls with family brought a sense of normalcy to my new life. Whether it was a weekly catch-up or a daily check-in, seeing their faces and hearing their voices helped bridge the distance.

2. Shared Activities: Doing things together, like watching the same movie or cooking a meal at the same time, made me feel closer to my family. These shared experiences, even from afar, added a personal touch to our interactions.

3. Celebrating Milestones: Celebrating birthdays and other special occasions virtually helped keep family traditions alive. Sending gifts and planning online parties brought a piece of home to my new life.

Tech Tools to Stay Connected

Technology played a huge role in keeping me connected with loved ones. Here’s how I made the most of it:

1. Messaging Apps: WhatsApp, Messenger, and similar apps allowed me to stay in touch instantly. Sharing photos, videos, and voice messages kept me updated on my family’s daily lives.

2. Social Media: Facebook helped me stay connected with extended family and friends. Posting updates about my life and seeing theirs created a sense of community.

3. Collaborative Apps: Google Photos and shared calendars made it easy to coordinate family activities and share memories, despite the distance.

Emotional Coping Mechanisms

Homesickness can be tough, but there are ways to manage the emotional toll:

1. Journaling: Writing down my thoughts and feelings helped me process emotions and provided a creative outlet. Reflecting on my experiences helped me focus on the positive aspects of my journey.

2. Mindfulness and Meditation: Practicing mindfulness and meditation reduced anxiety and helped me stay present. Apps like Headspace offered useful guided sessions.

3. Physical Activity: Regular exercise, whether it’s a walk or a home workout, boosted my mood and gave me a sense of accomplishment.

4. Seeking Support: Talking to a therapist or joining support groups offered a safe space to express my feelings and connect with others in similar situations.

Creating a Support System

Finding Local Expat Groups and Online Communities

Building a local support system was essential for my emotional well-being. Connecting with expats and locals helped me find my footing in a new place. Here’s how I went about it:

1. Expat Groups: I joined local expat groups through social media and community centers. These groups provided a platform to meet fellow expatriates, share experiences, and attend social events.

2. Language Classes: Enrolling in Dutch language classes not only helped me learn the language but also introduced me to other newcomers. The shared goal of learning created a sense of camaraderie.

Building Friendships with Colleagues and Neighbours

Forming friendships with colleagues and neighbours was key to creating a supportive network. Here’s what worked for me:

1. Work Social Events: Attending work social events, whether virtual or in-person, allowed me to get to know my colleagues better.

2. Neighbourhood Activities: Participating in neighbourhood events like community clean-ups or local festivals provided opportunities to meet and connect with neighbours.

3. Hosting Gatherings: Hosting small gatherings, like coffee mornings or potluck dinners, helped me build relationships with both colleagues and neighbours. These informal settings encouraged relaxed interactions.

Finding a Sense of Belonging

Establishing a sense of belonging in a new place takes time, but it’s definitely achievable. Here’s how I found my place:

1. Getting Involved: Volunteering or joining local clubs based on my interests helped me feel more integrated into the community and gave me a sense of purpose.

2. Exploring the City: Exploring the city, visiting museums, and attending local events helped me appreciate Dutch culture and made me feel more at home.

3. Creating Traditions: Starting new traditions, like regular family walks or Sunday brunches, provided a sense of continuity and belonging in our new life.

Embracing the New Culture

Exploring Dutch Traditions and Cuisine

Diving into local traditions and cuisine was a great way to feel more connected to my new home:

1. Local Festivals: Attending local festivals, like King’s Day and Sinterklaas, gave me a glimpse into Dutch culture and created memorable experiences.

2. Trying Dutch Cuisine: Sampling Dutch dishes, from stroopwafels to herring, was both enjoyable and immersive. Cooking traditional recipes at home also became a fun family activity.

Learning the Language

Learning Dutch was a significant step in feeling at home. Here’s how I approached it:

1. Language Classes: Taking structured language classes built a strong foundation and offered a social aspect, connecting me with fellow learners.

2. Language Apps: Using apps like Duolingo allowed me to practice daily and improve my skills at my own pace.

Finding Joy in Cultural Immersion

Embracing the local culture added joy to my experience and deepened my connection to my new home:

1. Cultural Activities: Participating in cultural activities, such as museum visits and theater performances, enriched my understanding of Dutch heritage.

2. Outdoor Adventures: Embracing cycling and exploring the Dutch landscapes became a favourite pastime.

3. Community Participation: Joining local events, from markets to charity runs, fostered a sense of belonging and made me feel part of the community.

Conclusion

Coping with homesickness and building a support system in a new country is a journey of resilience and adaptation. By staying connected with family, forming a local network, and immersing myself in the new culture, I found a sense of belonging and joy in my new life in the Netherlands. These strategies helped me navigate the challenges and enrich my overall experience.
